Experiencing rape, or any form of sexual violence, situates an individual in a suspended state, dangling from a pendulum oscillating between rage and release. In this suspended state, familiar objects, including the body, suddenly feel distorted and foreign. This dissociation from the body changes the psychic landscape, divorcing the physical self from the psychological self. The mind battles against what feels inescapable, seeking to separate itself in order to cope.
This body of work explores the fragmentation of the psyche resulting from sexual assault trauma. It goes beyond the physical act; addressing the emotional torment that trauma creates inside the mind.
